Prior to joining the finance industry, Reuben worked as a PE teacher in Brisbane. Whilst he enjoyed teaching, he always had a strong aptitude for numbers and interest in the property market – this prompted him to explore his career options.
“I’ve always loved fast paced environments and coming from a sports background I have a hunger for competitiveness and felt that there was more for me outside of teaching and could try working in the corporate world. That’s where finance became an option for me.”
Reuben decided he needed a change and made the decision to move to Melbourne where he began to pursue this new career interest.
Reuben’s first experience in broking
Reuben began at Aussie Home Loans where he gained a great introduction to the finance industry over three years. During this time, he realised that the key to success as a broker was strong relationships.
“My career in brokering took off as I focused on building great relationships, with clients, colleagues and other professionals.” he explains.
It was during this peak time in his career that he was introduced to Inovayt, a financial advisory firm with a great reputation for client service and long-standing relationships. When he had the opportunity to meet the Managing Director, Nick Reilly, and the chance to join the team arose, he jumped at the idea.
“[Nick] shared what Inovayt were about, what they’re looking for and what they want to do and it sounded like the perfect direction for me and the next step in my career.”
“I was really impressed with Inovayt’s outlook and the way they handle any obstacles that come from policy or industry changes. I took a lot of confidence from that that I’d made the right decision.”
The Inovayt difference
When people come to Inovayt, it’s a much different experience than going to one of the big brands, Reuben explains. “Inovayt has a personal touch when it comes to the consumer. It’s a much more tailored experience.”
When asked about how working for Inovayt can help someone starting out in the industry, Reuben said that mentorship is a key driver as well as the opportunity to learn from senior staff around him and the strong relationships they had developed over the years.
“Nick has been in the industry for 12 years, and there’s a couple of other senior brokers here. It’s these existing established relationships that you can leverage off. You don’t have to rely on online leads or cold calling, these leads are coming from existing relationships – it’s a warm handover.”
Reuben also highlighted the high staff retention rate due to the great working culture that they have established in the office. “You can own your own book; you can take it with you if you leave. But with such a good culture, once you’re in you don’t want to leave!”
“There is a very inclusive, positive environment. There are very different personalities, but individualism is promoted – and this becomes your point of difference as a broker.”
Outside of work, Reuben is an avid sportsman and plays semi-professional soccer. He highlights that the nature of mortgage broking is another important drawcard that allows him to pursue his passions.
“There’s more opportunity to be flexible in the workplace – it allows you the flexibility to have a family or have a hobby. It gives you the opportunity to be you.”
